Wooden door and cage

Description

This was the first 3D perler project I'd ever done (Laser Gate came later). I'd seen people make simple standees and the like, but then people started making boxes out of them (quite a few of them Minecraft-themed, interestingly enough). I thought I'd give it a go, watched some tutorials, heard some horror stories, and then completely forgot what I'd learned and half-assed the whole thing. It was really just a sort of "proof of concept" project to see if I had the knack for it. It worked out swimmingly. The cage is made of wood because I didn't want to use up my gray beads, and black (iron) wouldn't show up well on camera.

The door is my little nod to the days of my youth when I got HeroQuest for Christmas. HeroQuest, if you don't know, is a board game with quasi-D&D, tabletop RPG rules, a kind of gateway drug of sorts. I was just happy to play something that wasn't educational like Presto-Change-O (literally Monopoly for people who aren't good with money). Anyway, one of the first things we house-ruled was that we weren't going to bother asking the DM permission to open doors (seriously, that was a thing, and I think it even took a turn to do), so all those little closed door standees just sat in the box while all the other miniatures played. This door is also the result of what happens when you get a heart-shaped pegboard in a bucket of beads and you have no idea what to do with it. I've even got a larger one that I could make a tombstone out of (complete with legible text).

I had intended for a more "dramatic" approach with the photo, try some harsh lighting (with snoots and gobos--I don't know the plural for cucoloris) and get in really close with some dynamic angles, set up some scenes and dioramas. Unfortunately, I haven't finished one of the other props because I'm working on something else, and because I've been having a really tough time taking photos lately. I just can't seem to make anything look remotely decent (that's why this was taken with my phone instead of my usual Cybershot). In the meantime, we'll call this the clean shot, the continuity Polaroid before we begin principal photography.

The two smaller pegboards are for the top and bottom, while the sides are on the larger board. Originally, it wasn't going to have a bottom (so it could be placed on a dungeon tile, over someone's miniature, but I decided against it.
