A Ship for Two Bucks

Okay, it was really more like one buck, but I bought two of those little perler bead kits in case I ran out of black beads, and while I ended up having plenty left over, it's still worth making the joke about the PSN game A Space Shooter for Two Bucks. Anyone who's been around long enough to know me from Yahoo!360 knows I utterly adore scrolling spaceship shooters, games like Xevious, Ray Storm, Thunder Force V, Star Soldier: Vanishing Earth, just to name a scant few. As for the one for two bucks, I gave it a look, and decided against it; I just can't stand the presentation. So, in a kind of protest against that game, I spent my two bucks on a pair of perler bead kits as I'd wanted to give those a shot anyway.

As for a project, I thought of doing some palette-swaps of the Solvalou from Xevious (since grey beads are not too commonplace), but I couldn't find a good sprite image to work from. I checked out a few other craft from similar games, got some graph paper, and tried my hand at designing a ship. What I ended up with looked more like one of the racing ships from the Wipeout games, but I happen to like those as well. I especially like the design of the Qirex ship, so I made a little 8-bit variant on that and gave it the AG Systems ship's color scheme (the kits only had red, white, and black, anyway).

This is my first real attempt at perler beads, and since I have plenty left over from the little dollar kits, you'll probably be seeing at least a few more of these. When I run out, I might even take a cue from R-Type Final and write in the description: On this day, the Matsugawa MotorWorks series was complete.

Your Perler work looks very flat and difficult to break, which is always nice! Also, if you want gray beads, there are some smaller kits I've seen at craft stores, in the 5 to 9 dollar range, which have tons of gray in order to make kittens and stuff like that. It's not enough for a good Dino Crisis perler, since the gray shades are limited, but from what I've seen of Xevious, it could work for something in that vein.
