A New Direction

Description

Matsugawa Motorworks was an idea I had back in 2005 while reading about the history of the Delorean Motor Company. I was also reading a few books on car design, and started throwing down a few ideas for my ideal sports car. It never made it past an itemized "grocery list" of features, but I did sketch up a logo and badge, which is the MMW you see above.
With the Perler bead racers, it seemed like a good idea to dig up the image and use it as an identity for this fictional manufacturer. Of course, with a name like MMW, it only makes sense to give it a history not unlike that of BMW, if a little reversed. Back in the day, BMW was renowned (then infamous) as an airplane manufacturer (the infamy comes from their contribution to the German front of both world wars). Following the Treaty of Versailles, the company ceased aircraft fabrication in favor of motorcycles, and damn good ones at that. It wasn't until the 1930s they resumed making planes (namely engines), this time under the Nazi banner. Suffice to say, they eventually went back to making bikes and cars with faith fully restored in their abilities.

In the case of Matsugawa Motorworks, attention would shift from zero gravity racing to spacecraft, with the little fighter pictured below the logo as a prototype.

The logo card was fun to make; it measures about the size of a driver's license, and just might end up glued to the cover of one of my graph paper sketchbooks (or at least worn as a badge in a little ID card holder). For some reason, though, the black beads are very quick to melt, hence their looking a little more shiny than their red and white brethren that stuck to the ironing paper during heating.

The spaceships in both images, like last time, are really nice- it's surprising how big a difference a few pixels on the paint job can make in appearance, and I like the ID card, too. I've had a bit of trouble like that with black beads before, too, though- since I usually use it for an outline, it isn't too bad, but in smaller designs, it's very irritating.
